THE MORGAN HORSE

A Morgan is one of the most beautiful, athletic, and unique of horses. The breed excels in all disciplines, FEI, endurance riding and showing to name just a few. Their unique temperament and willingness to work means that they thrive as performance horses. The breed dates back to the 18th century coming from European stock. Morgans were utilised by the whole family for many different tasks. They were fine enough to be an eye catching horse, yet with their strength and power carried out all the strenuous farm work. Justin Morgan, the foundation stallion of the breed, was a renowned contestant competing with the local log pulling horses, while winning against top early Thoroughbreds in flat races. He was talked about long after his death. Morgans were given the ultimate honour when named as the official remount for the American Cavalry.

In America this breed has gone from strength to strength and is one of the most successful breeds in the country. Morgan shows throughout the USA are very popular and it is not unusual to have over a 1000 Morgan horses attend. It is a spectacular sight to see a Morgan working over fences, in Western tack, under saddle or in harness. Their versatility shines through. There are many different divisions within the Morgan show structure. Horses are divided into Park, English Pleasure, Classic Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure and Western Pleasure. Park horses are the most flambouyant, a high stepping energetic riding or driving horse with lots of flair and presence - similar to the horses paraded at Rotten Row in past centuries. English Pleasure horses still have a some elevation in their paces but must show perfect manners at all times when ridden or driven. They must flat foot walk and rein back on command, as well as show patience when asked to stand.

Western Pleasure horses compete in performance classes and are popular competitors in the Trail class, Reining division and Parade Horse class. Hunter Pleasure encompasses Road Hack, Hunter Hack and Showjumping. It requires a versatile horse to be successful in the many facets of this division. The Morgan horse remains unchanged through the centuries. The power and the glory of this breed lives on. Go ahead and see for yourselves!
